It’s no doubt that everyone loves Mexican food. In fact, those of you who live in the US are very familiar with some Mexican dishes known as burritos, tacos, and nachos. However, most of the Mexican dishes that you eat in your local Mexican places are actually already fused with some American ingredients. They’re actually known already as “Tex-Mex”.
What exactly does Tex-Mex mean, anyway?
In a simple sense, Tex-Mex refers to food that mixes both Mexican and Texan ingredients. That’s because Mexican food first became popular in Texas. That’s why most Mexican food that you see in the US all have Texan influences in it.
For example, you may be familiar with Tacos that has shredded cheese on the top. This isn’t actually authentic Mexican cuisine. It’s Tex-Mex cuisine! Other popular Tex-Mex dishes include chili con carne and cheesy nachos. In fact, did you know that hard taco shells aren’t exactly Mexican. They’re actually Tex-Mex.
So now that you know Tex-Mex, you may also now be wondering what authentic Mexican food is. Unlike Tex-Mex food, you’ll find that authentic Mexican food focuses more on vegetables and spices such as tomatoes, chili, corn, and coriander. Also, you’ll notice that there are no crispy tacos in Mexico. Rather, they use soft wrappers for their tacos. Their tacos also don’t have shredded cheese on top. These actually use white Mexican cheese. They may be pretty similar but they taste really different.
Aside from authentic and tex-mex cuisine, a new emerging type is the modern mexican cuisine. They use other bolder spices and veggies like cacao, agave, squash, and chili. However, they still retain a lot of the elements of authentic Mexican cuisine.
